Is it just me or does this line sound suspiciously like changing the business requirements to suit and existing application.

While I agree that technology should have a significant impact on the way business works, technology should never drive the business (unless your business is technology itself).
I do believe that unified communications will eventually result in presence-aware, Facebook-style interfaces but while the feeds from various communication mechanisms will be integrated, it's highly likely that feed that communications join will be determined by the relationship that a given contact has with the main person.
In other words, it doesn't matter if the communication is mail, telephone, IM or other, but I still think that we will have separate feeds for Work, Family, Hobbies and Complete Strangers. After all, you can already choose your friends and groups in Facebook.
