Why the Microsoft Solutions Framework is a good tool for System Center

The Microsoft Solutions Framework is a valuable yet often overlooked tool when working with System Center products. The MSF process model can be used as a roadmap for an Operations Manager or Configuration Manager project.

As Microsoft states at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785993.aspx,
the MSF process model divides the process of creating and deploying a solution into five distinct phases. These phases are:

Why IT will adopt Windows 7

In the next few days, I want to take some time to address the coming release of Windows 7. As a person who was named a Windows Vista Master, I want to look at three areas where Windows 7 will make a difference when Windows Vista did not seem to make a dent, so to speak.

Starting today, I will discuss the following topics:
1.	Why IT will adopt Windows 7
2.	Why XP users will switch to Windows 7
3.	Why Windows 7 will crush Linux (that’s right -- I said CRUSH)

HP and the mainframe

Interesting that the article says HP is staying away from the mainframe, while much of EDS's work is managing mainframe datacenters and maintaining or developing mainframe applications. Maybe from a tools perspective, HP are staying away from the mainframe, but in services, they still play in that area.

IBM Cuts pending

I read an article dated in September 2003 (the last layoff period) where SEMA-TECH indicated that the Vermont IBM plant had depreciated life expendency of "through 2008". See Quote below, looks like IBM is working toward the plan. So everyone in Vermont better be ready, as Vermont was given a 5 year notice based on the SEMA-TECH statement.

Could be Management Over-Due's in 2009

unfortunately in spite of ITIL's advice to focus on process before tools, many have not taken that to heart...the use of traditional software licenses and a quest for 'integrated ITSM Suites' only makes things worse. There's a more effective road to enlightenment...

Strategize 2009: Virtualization Continues to Lead

Virtualization is not a new topic, however, it continues to be an emerging and quickly-adopted strategy for combating several enterprise technology problems. How does adopting a continual virtualization plan help an organization's bottom line? In many ways, actually. Believe it or not, many have been slow to adopt this strategy. They still have datacenters full of under-utilized hardware, consuming precious resources.

Why should adopting a prominent virtual environment be a part of your 2009 strategy?

Top 20 Most Braindumped Certification Vendors of 2008

Well, it’s that time of year. In our first blog post about the “Top 20 Most Braindumped Certification Vendors” we promised that we would keep you abreast of the progress each vendor is making. Unfortunately, the numbers being presented here don’t show there is any progress being made, but I assure you that progress is being made. Although the numbers have risen since we published the first blog post, the numbers here are a combination of newer websites opening up and some of the other websites being shut down.

best performers come as not big surprise

The names of the companies that actually saw an increase in online sales, despite the bad economy, don't come as a big surprise--they're the ones that do the best job of catering to consumer demand.

A post on the Marketing Doctor's blog discussed Amazon's success:

"Amazon has this strength because from the beginning they have built themselves around the consumers’ experience."

What We Do

We use Windiagnostic software to monitor our user systems. It tracks Windows, configuration, and software changes. The application monitors the PC file system and Windows registry for changes—then reports any changes to our help desk.

And since we usually get blamed for everyting that goes wrong on a user PC (it's the network!), we are thus able to document everything users do to their systems--which keeps us out of the dog house!

Happy 2009

Here it is January 1, 2009 - a Happy New Year's to all, and here's hoping that 2009 will bring an improved economy.

I am happy to report that I received the 2009 Microsoft MVP Award today. All current MVPs must be reawarded on their anniversary date to remain in the program. I'm looking forward to working with my fellow Operations Manager MVPs for another year.

Remote office advantages

That is a good list of issues. It seems you can group telecommuting issues into two categories: 1. infrastructure, 2. social.

One way to deal with some of these structural and social issues is to telecommute from a remote office rather than from a home office.

Workers who work out of a Remote Office Center (or ROC) have improved infrastructure and more structure.
