Red Hat purchase of Qumranet hits Microsoft where it hurts

Red Hat has purchased Qumranet for about $107 million in cash and is grinning silly that it has snagged some desktop virtualization technology to avoid partnering up with Microsoft. Qumranet makes SolidICE, a product which will allow Red Hat to deliver software to a PC (even a Windows PC) from the data center. The Qumranet team created its own open source virtualization technology, Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM).

Virtualization - Breaking up is hard to do

Desktop virtualization concepts and benefits have already been proven out, largely through old-school remote-desktop products from companies like Citrix Systems and Microsoft. We know the benefits of standardization, managing better desktop change control, remote desktop access, desktop and data storage, and business continuity. Desktop virtualization has already begun the march to take over previous remote-desktop technologies.

Podcast: Simon Crosby - Why Simon Loves Hyper-V

In part 2 of my interview with Simon Crosby, Citrix CTO Virtualization, we delve deeper into Microsoft Hyper-V, why Simon is so excited about Microsoft's launch of Hyper-V, how Hyper-V is based on Xen as its reference model, why Simon sees Hyper-V as a good solution for SMBs, whether Red Hat's oVirt has any legs or not, and how Xen plans to be the dominant virtualization player in cloud computing. After part 1 and part 2 of this interview, I think we covered a lot of ground about virtualization.

The hypervisor as commodity, the management tools as big expenses

Microsoft quietly announced a new timeline and pricing for the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008, the tool intended to manage Hyper-V, Network World reports. The company posted this information in its System Center management blog last week. VMM 2008 is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter although anyone who follows Microsoft knows that ship-date promises posted in a blog isn't the same as a commitment written in stone. The last time Microsoft discussed VMM 2008, it was talking as if the product would be out by the third quarter, no later than Sept. 1, the article says.

Limitations Won't Dampen Hyper-V

Thursday was Hyper-V "hyperventilate day" as everyone reported about Hyper-V's release. I'm sure Windows Server 2008 machines all over the world will be downloading Hyper-V via Windows Update come the 2nd week in July. You can manually download Hyper-V until then. I'm excited to start working with the final bits on my servers as well, something I'll be doing after finishing this blog post.

Citrix Virtualization CTO Disputes Red Hat Hypervisor Strategy

Red Hat Takes Hypervisor Control Back From Citrix

Red Hat announced two important moves this week; open sourcing of Red Hat Network Satellite, and its own virtualization hypervisor oVirt. Open sourcing RHN Satellite is fundamentally about showing the industry Red Hat is still the keeper of the open source flame but the real strategic move is the development of oVirt. OVirt is built upon Kernel Virtual Mode, or KVM, which is virtualization built right into the Linux operating system, and has been maturing over the past two years. Until now Red Hat's virtualization strategy has been built around open source Xen, much like other players such as Oracle and Sun.

The virtual desktop grows more sophisticated

Are we moving forward or backward in time? The virtual desktop is growing more sophisticated now that Citrix owns Xen and is beefing up features like its Access Gateway to work with the XenDesktop virtual desktop platform. The more we move ahead, the more it seems as if we are regaining the functionality of the good old mainframe terminal. But in this case, its PCs and its anywhere/anytime access.
Microsoft's own flavors of desktop virtualization and cloud computing have a lot to compete with and it remains unclear how Citrix and Microsoft will remain partners while also competing for virtualization market share.

In what ways can Citrix extend Hyper-V?

Lord knows the technology won't be perfect when it ships, but XenServer is essentially a competing hypervisor. So what is Citrix planning that will both work with Hyper-V and increase use of XenServer? Management? Extra features? If you have an idea, spill it here or on this post on Microsoft Subnet.

Microsoft & Citrix Accidently Create Virtualization Battleground

Introducing the Citrix Branch Repeater from Microsoft and Citrix. Next... the brouter and the Ethernet vampire tap. I thought I'd slipped into a Star Trek time wrap when I read the news Microsoft and Citrix introduced their Branch Repeater Tuesday... star date, circa 1988? I wonder how much money these to titans spent coming up with that product name?

Cisco to buy Citrix?

What would Cisco want with Citrix? Apparently IBM and Cisco are rumored to be interested in purchasing the application delivery company. Citrix, which makes GoToMyPC and WANScaler, among other products, last year got its claws into the virtualization market via its purchase of XenSource. A XenDesktop is expected in the first half of this year. With Cisco - and other major vendors - building their virtualization offerings, perhaps an acquisition of this sort would make sense for Cisco.
